Tools: Shed Essentials For The Garden
If you’re new to gardening, wandering up and down the aisles of the local garden centre looking at all of the different tools available can be pretty daunting. What do you actually need, and what is more of a specialized tool? Regardless of how big or small your garden is, there are a few things that you need to have.
Essential Tools
The first thing on your list should be a shovel. Whether you’re adding soil to your flowerbeds or planting a shrub, you’re going to need a shovel with a rounded tip for the garden. You should also get a spade – a shovel with a flat edge. These are ideal for cutting clean edges along your flowerbeds. It may seem strange to get two of basically the same tool, but those seemingly small differences will have a big impact on how easy some jobs are in the garden. Make sure they’re sturdy!
You’re also going to want to get both varieties of rakes: one for your lawn (the kind with fanned tines that you would use for leaves in autumn) and one for your garden. Garden rakes generally have a flat row of thicker tines. These are used level soil, mix in fertilizer and more.

A cultivator can be very handy to break up soil, and a weeder helps get those tough little invaders out, roots and all.
You should consider getting the smaller versions of these tools for the more delicate work in the garden.
A large pair of shears is useful for pruning hedges and trees, and a small pair for flowers and other plants.
Garden gloves are also important; they can help protect your hands from the tools, as well as from some of the weeds, which may have sharp thistles.
Unless you have a very small garden, you might want to consider a wheelbarrow. It will help you save your back if you have to move soil or plants around in your space.
