We all know the garden can yield some amazing flavours. From fruits and vegetables to herbs, there are delights for the palate that could be literally just outside your door. They say a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, and it turns out that’s how they taste, too. Roses with darker coloured petals will have a stronger flavour, and lighter roses will have a less intense flavour. It’s a good idea to remove the white portion of the petals, which is bitter.
If you like asparagus, you will love the mild taste of day lilies. Like with roses, make sure you remove the bitter, white part of the petal. It’s very important that you avoid other kinds of lilies; while day lilies are safe to eat, other varieties of lilies can make you sick if you ingest them. Be careful when eating these edible flowers!
Flowers Are Great for So Many Things!
While lavender is used in many products for it’s delightful scent, it has many uses! It can be used in personal care products, as well as in scent satchels for your linens, but it’s also growing in popularity as an herb to cook with. It has a floral taste, with an undertone of mint and rosemary. You can add it to a dessert for an unexpected boost of flavour. Keep in mind that with lavender, you don’t need to add a lot to get a big flavour impact.
You’ve probably heard of Echinacea, as it has a strong reputation as a medicinal herb to help with ailments like the common cold. This workhorse flower it not only has health benefits, but it also brings a dash of colour to your dishes.
Even though every gardener has cursed them at some point or another, you might change your mind once you sample the dandelion’s sweet, honeyed flavour. Dandelions can get bitter as they get older. When they’re young they can be delicious and tender!

A few words of caution – make sure you carefully check to make sure that the variety of flower you’ve planted is edible before you have a taste, and wash flowers thoroughly before you eat. For most flowers, only the petals are consumable. And if there’s any doubt, DO NOT EAT IT! It might not be one of the edible flowers, but one of the poisonous ones instead…
