Mulch: An Essential Garden Feature

BigYellowBag Mulch is finely shredded which makes it easy to distribute in the garden. It helps control weeds, and maintain moisture. It’s also a great aesthetic addition to your garden. Let’s be honest for a minute: a chocolate muffin and a chocolate cupcake are basically the same thing. But if you were to try and serve the muffins as the dessert at a birthday party, everyone would be wondering why the cupcakes were icing-naked…

A Garden Without Mulch is Like a Cupcake Without Icing!

It’s not that there’s anything wrong with muffins; it’s just that when you want that finished look (especially for a special event), you really need to top it off. In the same way, quality mulches help to give your garden that professional touch; the little something extra to make it look complete.

But did you know that way beyond just appearances, mulch is actually a really useful gardening tool?

Mulch offers a layer of protection to your soil (and your back) by helping to keep weeds out. If you hate digging the dandelions out from your flower bed, then mulching is a must for you.

Just like the insulation in your house, mulch helps to regulate your soil’s temperature, so that it stays warmer in the early spring and later fall, as well as cooler in the hot summer months.

Maintain Moisture

It will also help your garden soil retain moisture. This is good news for your water bill, especially if you’re in a dry climate. Alternately, if it rains a lot where you are, a layer of mulch can help prevent your soil from being washed away.

Even as mulch decomposes, it serves a really important purpose to your garden soil. It feeds the microorganisms in your soil and releases nutrients, making your garden bed even more hospitable to your plants.

Of course there are many options out there when it comes to mulch, but we recommend you use the BigYellowBag system. Depending on your location, you may have multiple options for mulch, or mulch may not be available in your area. Also, forget about having to pick-up dozens of small bags or having to clean up your driveway after receiving a bulk load… We’ll deliver it straight to your door in the clean, convenient BigYellowBag! You can even order a BigYellowBag of Black Garden Soil at the same time and get it all delivered at once.

Generally speaking, you want to spread your mulch about two to four inches thick. Use a rake to get a nice, even covering. Don’t put it right up next to the plants you want, or tree trunks – they need a bit of breathing room.

Keep an eye on your garden, and as things decompose, apply a fresh layer. It’s really as easy as that.
