What do a sponge, a blanket and a shield have in common? Each of them shares properties with mulch. Mulch is like a sponge, because it helps retain moisture in your garden bed. It protects your plants and soil from drying out when it’s a heat wave. That’s not only good news for your garden, but also good news for your water bill. Blankets and mulch are both great insulators. Whether your garden features early spring risers or late autumn bloomers (or both), BigYellowBag mulch protects these plants from the cold so they can grow and thrive, even when they’re in their youngest and most vulnerable state. 

There are a lot of things mulch protects your garden from, like a shield. If you live in an area with a lot of rain, mulch will help prevent your soil from getting washed away. It will also protect your garden from invaders – namely, weeds. This is because mulch helps to block out the sun, meaning that weeds have a hard time germinating, and those that have already started have a hard time keeping the process going.  

As mulch decomposes, it feeds the microorganisms in your soil and releases nutrients, helping your plants to grow.  

On top of all the work mulch does for you in the garden is how good it looks while doing it.  

There’s no denying that a layer of mulch offers a clean, uniform, finished look to any garden bed.

We recommend you spread mulch about three inches (just over 7.5 centimetres) thick in your garden, using a rake to get a nice, even covering. Make sure you don’t put it right up next to the plants or tree trunks you want in your garden – remember, it is very effective in smothering weeds, and you don’t want to accidentally harm your tomatoes or tulips.
