Looking to raise/level sizeable area of our yard. Formerly flooded, new drain tiles, resulted in hard-packed mud area ….no grass. Would garden soil be appropriate to level and seed this fall or is there another soil product for new lawns (other than sod)

  4. Hey Lawrence! Thanks for reaching out. Sorry to hear about the flooded area of your yard. That’s always frustrating. I would recommend a soil blend with more topsoil/mineral soil in it, as opposed to a light garden soil. You’ll want to use a heavier soil that is more structurally robust. Some of our suppliers carry a product called Nature’s Blend, which is our Black Garden Soil mixed with a higher ratio of mineral soil. Reach out to your local BigYellowBag supplier and ask about availability of Nature’s Blend, or ask about alternatives for levelling your yard, like a mineral soil or topsoil. Seed can be difficult to establish. Be sure to do plenty of research about seed varieties, and how to take care of your seed while establishing. You’ll want to ensure the soil you use for the top level of your yard is very nutritious to give your seed the best chance at success. Bear in mind, seed is very difficult to establish, and it could take up to 3 years for your seed to look as good as sod does. Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and good luck with your project!
